What makes the Embracing Early Reading Support System different from other reading programs?

The Embracing Early Reading Support System focuses on each child as an individual reader.  Embracing Early Reading integrates the
whole-language and phonetic approaches to reading to provide the child with the most balanced and effective reading instruction.

The Embracing Early Reading Support System is affordable, comprehensive, and understandable.  It provides you with the opportunity and ability to provide a child with reading instruction that focuses on developing independent and strategic reading.

What level(s) of Embracing Early Reading should I purchase?

The best level of reading instruction is at a child’s “instructional” level.  (The website contains both a correlation chart to common text leveling systems and an outline for developmental reading levels.)

It is critical that a child be provided instruction at their “instructional level” AND that a child have access to “independent” books that can be read independently (with no support).  A child’s independent level is typically one developmental level below the “instructional” level.

It is recommended to purchase the level that is the child’s current instructional level and all proceeding levels.  It is also recommended to purchase one or two independent levels for the child to have a “library” of books that can be read independently.

What if the child, at home, becomes upset when I sit down to support
him/her reading and does not want to read?

Sometimes when supporting a child with reading, the child may become upset.  This is more commonly seen when the level of text is very difficult or challenging for the child.

When the child becomes upset, it is important to think about the child as an individual and the needs of the child.  If the child would benefit from taking a break from reading when he/she is upset, then provide the child with a break (letting the child know that when he/she is ready to read then you will read together).  If the child needs reinforcing language to increase his/her
self-confidence and intrinsic motivation, use reinforcing language with the child.

Our goal is for children to become independent and strategic readers and life-long lovers of literature.

What if the child wants to read the same book over and over?

Rereading has many benefits.  Rereading fosters and strengthens fluency, phrasing, word recognition, comprehension (understanding what was read), and self-confidence.  Rereading a book demonstrates that the child enjoys the story, and reading for enjoyment is one of the goals in supporting a child who will become a life-long lover of literature.

Rereading is encouraged!  When the child is independently reading books on his/her own, familiar books are a good choice.  If you love mint chocolate chip ice cream, would you only enjoy (eat) it one time?  NO!  Rereading a favorite book is like enjoying your favorite ice cream… the more you have it, the more you enjoy it, and the better it becomes!

It is recommended to have the child reread a book that is familiar to him/her before reading a new book with you.

What is the appropriate age to begin working with a child on reading?

It is dependent on each child as an individual.  By age five, all children should begin being immersed in the reading process.  However, some children may show an interest in reading as early as age 3.

What if the child reads all of the books in one of the developmental levels,
but is not ready to move to the next level?

If the child is not reading the books in the current developmental level independently (without support) then this level is still “instructional” for the child.  It is important to continue to work with the child on this level and with these books.

Rereading is an important component to the reading process and it is okay and encouraged to support a child reading a book that she/he has already seen.
